Requirements for SSW

Automobile Transport

The SSW (Tokutei Ginou) Visa – Automobile Transport is for foreign workers who want to work in truck
driving, cargo transport, and passenger transport in Japan.

Age Requirement

• Applicants must generally be between 18 and 40 years old to qualify for the visa.

Skills and Exam Requirements:

To qualify, you must pass:

Skills Test:

• Tokutei Ginou (特定技能) Exam – Automobile Transport
• Covers truck driving, vehicle operation, safety protocols, and cargo handling

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT or JFT-Basic)

• Must pass JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic (A2 level)

Japanese Driver’s License:

• Must obtain a valid Japanese driver’s license (大型自動車免許 – Large Vehicle License)
• Foreign licenses may need to be converted through a driving test in Japan l)

Job Duties under SSW - Automobile Transport

✔ Operating trucks, buses, or delivery vehicles
✔ Transporting goods or passengers across Japan
✔ Ensuring vehicle safety and performing basic maintenance
✔ Following traffic laws and safety regulations
✔ Loading/unloading cargo and handling delivery paperwork

Visa & Employment Details

• Initial Duration: 1 year, renewable up to 5 years
• No Family Sponsorship: Cannot bring spouse or children
• Employer Sponsorship: Must have a job offer from a Japanese transport company
• Salary: Equal to or higher than a Japanese worker in the same role
• Industry Support Organization: Ensures fair treatment and training

Application Process

Step 1: Prepare for the Exams
• Study Japanese road laws, vehicle operation, and safety procedures
• Take Tokutei Ginou – Automobile Transport practice tests
• Pass JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic
Step 2: Obtain a Japanese Driver’s License
• If you have a foreign truck driving license, check if it can be converted in Japan
• If not, you must take a driving test in Japan
Step 3: Find a Job
• Apply through SSW job matching agencies
• Companies conduct interviews & driving skill assessments
Step 4: Visa Application
• Employer provides a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
